Here's a number that should keep you up at night: 92% of small business websites never generate a single lead. Not one call. Not one form submission. Not one booking.
These aren't broken websites. Most of them look fine. They load. They have pages. They have a contact form buried somewhere at the bottom. And yet they produce nothing.
We've audited dozens of small business websites across Ontario — plumbers, restaurants, salons, auto shops, fitness studios, you name it. The same problems show up over and over. The good news? Every single one is fixable.
1. There's No Clear Call to Action
This is the #1 problem, and it's the easiest to fix. Most small business websites have a contact page and that's it. No button in the header. No "Book Now" in the hero section. No phone number visible without scrolling.
Your visitor should know exactly what to do within 3 seconds of landing on your site. If they have to hunt for your phone number or figure out how to book, they're gone.
The Fix
- One primary CTA. Put a gold "Book Now" or "Get a Quote" button in the top navigation. Make it a different color from everything else.
- Repeat it. Add the same CTA after every major section — hero, services, about, testimonials.
- Click-to-call on mobile. 60%+ of your traffic is mobile. Your phone number should be a tappable link, not an image.
2. It Loads Too Slowly
Google's data shows that 53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Most small business websites we audit take 5-8 seconds. Some take 10+.
The usual culprits: oversized images (a 5MB hero photo that should be 200KB), bloated page builders (Wix and Squarespace add hundreds of kilobytes of framework code), and no caching.
If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, more than half your mobile visitors are gone before they even see your homepage.
The Fix
- Compress every image to under 200KB before uploading. Use WebP format.
- Ditch heavy page builders if speed matters. Custom HTML loads 3-5x faster.
- Enable browser caching and a CDN. We include this on every site we build.
3. It Talks About You, Not the Customer
Most small business websites open with "Welcome to [Company Name]. We were founded in 2015. We are family-owned." Nobody cares.
Your customer landed on your site because they have a problem. A leaking pipe. A wedding venue they need to book. A car that won't start. Your homepage should lead with their problem and your solution — not your company history.
The Fix
Rewrite your hero section in this format: "[What you do] for [who you serve] in [your area]." Then add one sentence about the outcome. Example: "Professional plumbing repairs for Toronto homeowners. Same-day service, upfront pricing, no mess left behind."
4. No Local SEO Foundation
If you search "[your service] near me" and your business doesn't show up, your website isn't doing its job. A pretty website that nobody finds is an expensive business card.
The most common SEO mistakes we see on small business sites:
- Page titles say "Home" or "Services" instead of "Plumber in Toronto | Same-Day Repairs | [Company Name]"
- No service area pages (if you serve multiple cities, you need a page for each)
- No schema markup (Google can't tell your site represents a local business)
- No Google Business Profile linked, or it's unclaimed
Fixing these four things alone can move you from page 3 to page 1 for local searches in 60-90 days.
5. No Trust Signals
Would you hire a contractor whose website has no reviews, no photos of completed work, and no information about who actually works there? Neither would your customers.
Trust is the currency of local business. Your website needs to prove you're real, reliable, and good at what you do — before anyone picks up the phone.
The Fix
- Add real customer reviews — not testimonials you wrote yourself. Pull them from Google and display them with star ratings.
- Include before-and-after photos for service businesses. This alone doubles conversion rates.
- Show your face. A photo of you or your team builds more trust than any stock photo ever will.
- List your license number, insurance, and certifications if applicable.
6. It's Not Built for Mobile
Over 60% of local business website traffic comes from phones. If your site looks great on a desktop but is unusable on an iPhone, you're invisible to more than half your potential customers.
"Responsive" isn't the same as "mobile-first." A responsive site shrinks down to fit a phone. A mobile-first site is designed for the phone from the ground up — tap targets sized for fingers, forms that don't require pinching to zoom, and content that loads fast on cellular data.
7. You Built It Once and Forgot About It
This is the most expensive mistake. A website is not a one-time purchase. It's a living marketing asset. Google rewards sites that are updated regularly. Customers notice when your last blog post is from 2023. Broken links accumulate. Plugins go out of date and create security holes.
We tell every client the same thing: a website that nobody touches is a website that's slowly dying.
What It Actually Costs to Fix
Here's where most small business owners get stuck. They think they need to spend $3,000-$5,000 on a rebuild, or they need to learn web design themselves on nights and weekends.
Neither is true. A professional, mobile-first website with local SEO, booking, and monthly updates starts at $549 one-time for our Starter plan, or $125/month for our fully-managed Growth plan — hosting, updates, SEO, and monthly reports all included.
We build for local Ontario businesses — trades, restaurants, salons, retail, auto shops, fitness studios. If you serve local customers, we know what your website needs and what it doesn't.
The Bottom Line
Your website should be your hardest-working employee. It should show up on Google, answer questions, build trust, and capture leads — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If it's not doing that, it's costing you money every single day you leave it broken.
The fixes aren't complicated. But they require someone who knows what they're doing and who understands local business — not a template you bought for $15.
