We have audited hundreds of local business websites — plumbers, restaurants, salons, auto shops, contractors, retail stores. Almost none of them had Google Search Console connected. That is like running a store with the lights off and guessing which products people are asking for.

Search Console is the only tool that shows you real Google data about your own website. Not estimates, not a third-party guess — actual queries, actual impressions, actual clicks, straight from Google. It costs nothing and takes about 15 minutes to set up.

Step 1: Connect It (15 Minutes, Once)

  1. Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with the Google account you use for your Google Business Profile.
  2. Add a Domain property (not URL prefix) — this covers your https, http, www, and non-www versions in one dashboard. Those are four different websites to Google if you only track one.
  3. Verify. If your site was built by an agency, ask them to drop the DNS TXT record in — it takes two minutes. Otherwise Google gives you a file to upload.
  4. Submit your sitemap at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml so Google knows every page you want indexed.

That is it. Data starts showing up within 24 to 72 hours. Historical data builds from there, so the sooner you connect it, the sooner you have a baseline.

Step 2: The Four Reports That Actually Matter

Search Console has a lot of tabs. Ignore most of them. These four are where the money is:

Performance — what people search to find you

This shows every query your site appeared for in the last 16 months, with impressions (times it showed) and clicks. Filter by "Last 28 days" and sort by impressions.

Pages — which pages earn and which do not

Same data, grouped by URL. For a local business this usually reveals that your homepage does 80% of the work while your services pages sit at position 40 doing nothing. That tells you exactly where to invest next.

Indexing — what Google actually has

This is the report that catches real problems. If a service page is marked "Discovered — currently not indexed" or "Crawled — currently not indexed," Google found it but decided it was not worth showing. Usually that means thin content, duplicate content, or a page with no real information on it.

Core Web Vitals — how fast and stable your site is

Google measures real visitor experience here: how fast your page loads, how much the layout jumps around, how quickly it responds to a tap. "Poor" on mobile is a ranking and conversion problem at the same time — we regularly see a 15–25% conversion lift after fixing it.

Step 3: A 20-Minute Monthly Routine

You do not need to live in Search Console. Once a month, do this:

  1. Check Indexing. Anything not indexed that should be? Fix it or ask your developer to.
  2. Sort Performance by impressions. Pick two pages where you rank 5–15 and improve them — add 200–300 words answering a real customer question, add internal links from your services page.
  3. Send your sitemap again after publishing anything new, or use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for the new page.
  4. Check Core Web Vitals for pages marked "Poor," especially on mobile.
Search Console is not a dashboard you admire. It is a to-do list. Every number on it points to one specific action — and that action costs you nothing but an hour.

What We See Most Often

Across the Ontario businesses we work with, the same three problems show up again and again:

You Do Not Have to Do This Alone

Every website we build at MWL Media ships with Search Console and Google Analytics already connected, the sitemap submitted, and a plain-English monthly report that tells you what changed and what we are doing about it. No jargon, no 40-page PDF nobody reads.

Sites start at $549 one-time, or $125/month fully managed — hosting, updates, SEO monitoring, and Search Console reporting included. We work with local businesses across Ontario: trades, restaurants, salons, retail, auto shops, and professional services.

If your current site has never been connected to Search Console, that is usually the first thing we fix. It costs nothing and it changes every decision after it.
